Long-Term Care

Long-Term Care

Long-term care is characterized as care that is:

  • Received as a result of a chronic, debilitating and possibly permanent illness or injury; or in the absence of any definite medical condition, received because of the aging process;
  • Typically received over a long period;
  • Received when recovery is not usually expected;
  • Oriented toward maintenance rather than cure, i.e., helping a person to function despite a permanent impairment; and
  • Often administered by non-medical personnel, or by family and friends.
